    On June 24th, Sister Marcella Schmalz will celebrate the 60th year of her monastic profession. Sister Marcella, the fourth of six children, was born to Edward and Helen Blunck Schmalz on a family farm near Paris, Arkansas.
    She attended school taught by Benedictine Sisters from St. Scholastica Monastery, Fort Smith, Arkansas, and when very young knew that she would some day become a sister.
    Sister says of her vocation, "When I entered the convent in 1943, my parents were very proud that one of their five daughters chose to enter the convent. I give thanks to my parents and the Benedictine Sisters who encouraged and inspired me in my answer to this call."
    Sister served the Church and the order in hospitals in Boonville, Missouri, Van Buren, Arkansas, and in Canyon, Texas, in the old Neblett and the Palo Duro Hospitals.
    Her last 14 years of ministry outside the monastery were in pastoral care at St. Anthony's Hospital, Amarillo,
    Texas.
    Sister was a founding member of St. Benedict Monastery, when it was a mission of St. Scholastica Monastery from 1971 to 1982 and one of the six founding members of the dependent monastery in 1982.
    Sister serves St. Benedict Monastery as Secretary of the Corporation', on the Communty council, as head of food service, assistant formation director, vocation director and oblate director.
